The 'Barbie' and 'Sex Education' Star Will Be Joined By Sharon D Clarke
The National Theatre has announced its new rendition of Oscar Wilde's timeless comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest,' under the direction of Max Webster. The production boasts an impressive cast featuring Ncuti Gatwa, known for his roles in Doctor Who' and Sex Education,' alongside Sharon D Clarke, a three-time Olivier Award recipient. Audiences can experience this Wilde classic at the Lyttelton Theatre from November 20, 2024, to January 25, 2025.
Director Max Webster, making his National Theatre debut, describes the opportunity to work with Gatwa and Clarke as a "dream come true". With a track record of successful productions like Life Of Pi' and Macbeth,' featuring David Tennant, Webster regards The Importance Of Being Earnest' as one of the "the most brilliant bits of English language ever written".
Ncuti Gatwa makes a triumphant return to the stage, following his meteoric rise to Hollywood fame with his performance in the box office smash Barbie'. Initially rising to prominence through the Netflix series Sex Education,' Gatwa is no stranger to theatre with a successful run as Demetrius in the 2018 Globe production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

What Is The Story of The Importance Of Being Earnest'?
Jack and Algy, two well-to-do bachelors in Victorian England, are wishing for some excitement in their lives. Both creating an alter ego named Earnest, Jack and Algy attempt to win the hearts of Gwendolyn and Cecily, two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Earnest. As the pair struggle to keep up with their stories, the foursome becomes entangled in a tale of deception and misadventure.
