An Ideal Husband

Why see An Ideal Husband?

One of Oscar Wilde's greatest masterpieces

Sir Robert Chiltern is on a quest to rise through the ranks of the British Government with his unparalleled sense of ambition. All seems to be in hand and his success a sure thing until the machiavellian Mrs Cheveley arrives with some rather distressing information. In this fast-paced comedy, Wilde brings political satire into the heart of the English home.

Set over the course of one day, An Ideal Husband is filled to the brim with blackmail, dishonour and betrayal. Along with The Importance of Being Earnest, it is one of Wilde's most produced works and is considered one of his great masterpieces.

What is An Ideal Husband about?

Sir Robert Chiltern and his wife, Lady Chiltern are hosting a dinner party at their stylish and exclusive Grosvenor Square home. Among their guests include the brightest stars of English society, however their night is about to take a dark turn when Mrs Cheveley, Lady Chiltern's childhood enemy, arrives. Armed with knowledge of Robert's past misdemeanours Mrs Cheverly holds his fate within her hands.
