UNANIMOUS ACCLAIM FOR MARK RYLANCE

With a string of reputable awards, numerous extensions and Broadway success, Jez Butterworth's 2009 play Jerusalem has become a modern classic. Taking a look at rural life in contemporary England, Butterworth has created a riotously comic yet mesmerizing blend of nostalgia about past country life and snub of the sterile modern world.

Set in Wiltshire, England, it is morning on St. George's Day and Johnny 'Rooster' Byron ? referred to as a contemporary Pied Piper - is a wanted man. His son, Marky, wants his dad to take him to the country fair, Troy Whitworth wants to give him a beating, the council officials want to serve him an eviction notice, and his friends want to tap into his ample supply of alcohol and drugs.

Directed by Ian Rickson, Jerusalem stars Olivier and Tony Award winning Mark Rylance, who is a playwright as well as actor, stars as hell-raiser Johnny 'Rooser' Byron, while the role of Ginger will be played by Mackenzie Crook, best known for his role as Gareth Keenan in The Office.

Apollo Theatre lets down play and cast

What a fantastic play. My husband and I wonder how Mark Rylance can still speak and stand after his performance as Johnny every night. That said, we had front row Dress Circle seats which were woeful and a disgrace. The seats were old and hard; to see the front of the stage was impossible without leaning forward, and the acoustics were grim. We stood at the BACK of the Dress Circle, and were able to hear far better ! Daylight robbery. Truly a betrayal of a wonderful play with wonderful actors. ... Read more
