Why see Evita?
Back in London
On paper, a musical about the wife of Argentine dictator Juan Peron sounds a little strange. But then, who would have thought an obscure book of poems about cats would make a theatrical phenomenon? Thank the gods then for Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice who persevered with both of the above, the former becoming this powerhouse of a show that follows the rise of Eva Peron from humble origins to the national treasure of Argentina. Star making and spellbinding, Evita is a gilded classic that captivates fans old and new whenever it plays.
Don't miss Emma Hatton who reprises the role of Evita from the recent UK tour, alongside Gian Marco Schiaretti as Che, the voice of the revolution. Expect a captivating production that includes the show-stoppers 'Don't Cry For Me, Argentina' and 'On This Night of a Thousand Stars'.
WHAT IS EVITA ABOUT?
Set in late 1940's Buenos Aires, this multi-award winning musical follows the controversial South American figure from her early life as an ambitious actress, her rise to power as Argentina's dynamic First Lady and would-be vice president, through to her eventual early death from cancer. The choric character of Che narrates the story and represents the simple and poor Argentinean workers who loved, admired and supported Eva.
Did you know?
In addition to a well heeled life, Eva also travelled extensively in death. After a government coup in the 1950s, her body was exhumed and hidden before being discovered and taken to Milan and buried under a false name. Her journey didn't end there - she was then taken to Madrid, before finally being repatriated in Argentina by Juan's third wife Isabel.
