Why see Twelfth Night?

Everyone is looking for love - some in impossible places. Some mourn the love they have lost. Some long for love they are refused. In Illyria love aches and madness rules.

RSC Chief Associate Director Gregory Doran directs a company including Richard Wilson, joining the RSC for the first time to play Malvolio. An award-winning actor and director Richard's recent stage appearances include Whipping It Up, Waiting for Godot and What the Butler Saw. In addition to his role as Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave, Richard's other TV includes the BBC's Merlin.

Among others returning to the Company he is joined by Nancy Carroll as Viola, Alexandra Gilbreath as Olivia and James Fleet as Andrew Aguecheek. Nancy is currently appearing in Arcadia at the Duke of York's while Alexandra was most recently at the RSC in Merry Wives the Musical. James has just opened The Observer at the National Theatre and is well known for playing the role of Hugo in BBC 1's The Vicar of Dibley.

Gregory's recent RSC productions include 2008's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love's Labour's Lost and the award-winning Hamlet.

The infectious humour of Sir Toby Welch and his (her) late night drinking party had the whole audience clapping along and laughing - and within moments we are moved by Caesario's torn emotions, laughing at Malvolio's hilarious reactions to the faux billet doux, and altogether enraptured by the fantastic flow of this ever-popular play. At a touch over two and a half hours it is a long sit on hard benches without an interval and whilst I loved the gentle text-expanding pacing at the start our backsides were paying for it by the end. ... A Malvolio Beyond All Others

Despite a weak Olivia, (which means a few dreary conversational scenes with Cesario that you really just can’t wait to have over), this production sparkles and roars and has a Malvolio who perfectly combines dignity and pathos and malice. A Malvolio who is us. The production also has one strange, irreplaceable, invisible player: the genuine spirit of theatre. ... Read more

Terrific evening out

The show was a delight from start to finish. We saw Maya Wasowicz in the role of Viola (as Nancy Carroll was unwell), and she was outstanding. What a rare talent! Hope to see her in more roles in the future. (and we heard every word) ... Read more
