Why see Titus Andronicus?

Rape, murder and cannibalism

Blanche McIntyre brings this classic into the modern day, providing a chilling and contemporary outlook onto 2017. Titus Andronicus returns from a 10-year war where he lost 21 sons. Feeling betrayed by his nation and his family in tatters Titus embarks on a violent cycle of revenge with Tamora, Queen of the Goths. Rape, cannibalism, mutilation and murder ensue making it one of Shakespeare's bloodiest play.

As part of the RSC's Rome Season at the Barbican Centre in London, Titus Andronicus is the final instalment in the 2017 winter season. The season takes a chronological approach to Shakespeare's Roman tragedies, following some key characters the season will document the rise and fall of the worlds biggest empire.
