Why see Evita?
BACK IN THE WEST END FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY!
Winging its way into the Dominion Theatre this Autumn for a short time only, EVITA is the first musical to be staged since the closure of We Will Rock You in May, with this being the latest stop on its UK tour. With more than 20 major awards under its belt, including the Olivier Award for Best Musical back in 1978, and Eva Peron being one of the most coveted roles in musical theatre, this powerful and compelling musical biopic by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice is simply not to be missed.
WHAT IS THE SHOW ABOUT?
The story follows the early life and rise to power of the charasmatic Eva Peron, wife to Argentine president Juan Peron. As a precocious 15-year old, Eva coerces her older lover to take her with him to the heady heights of Buenos Aires, where she wants to become a movie actress. After promptly abandoning him, Eva sleeps her way up the social ladder, becoming a radio star, model, and finally actress.
Her fame and beauty do not go unnoticed however, as a presidential hopeful soon catches her eye, and she embarks in a tempestuous marriage, where she forsakes love for her political ambitions, only to realise that Peron truly loved her for her, and not her political advantages.
The 1998 movie Evita saw Madonna cast as Eva and Antonio Banderas as Che, and Jonathan Pryce as Peron and received five Oscar nominations, winning one Best Original Song (You Must Love Me).
DID YOU KNOW?
Evita was the first British musical to win a Tony Award in 1979, just one year after winning Best Musical at the Oliviers.
