No Man's Land

Why see No Man's Land?

THE RETURN OF MCKELLAN AND STEWART

A year after performing two great plays in repertory across the Pond, Sirs Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart star in Harold Pinter's black comedy No Man's Land, presented as part of Playful Productions' fifth anniversary celebrations.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

In No Man's Land, we meet two elderly writers, Hirst (successful but a raging alcoholic) and Spooner (a failed writer), who meet on Hampstead Heath and continue to drink and talk late into the night at Hirst's home. All seems well until the arrival of Hirst's menacing henchmen. Cue power struggles and mind games where relationships are exposed, with menace and hilarity in one of Pinter's most dark and entertaining plays.

The last West End revival of the play was Rupert Goold's 2009 production, which featured stellar performances by Michael Gambon as 'Hirst', David Bradley as 'Spooner', with the two henchmen played by David Walliams as 'Foster' and Nick Dunning as 'Briggs'. McKellan and Stewart performed No Man's Land in rep in 2014 at New York's Cort Theatre alongside Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, with actors Shuler Hensley and Billy Crudup.
