With a contemporary twist on a timeless classic, early 1980s Gibraltar sets the unlikely scene for this production of Much Ado About Nothing. The production, directed by accomplished British Theatre Director and Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London, Josie Rourke, received a 2011 Oliver Award nomination.
Shakespeare's colourful characters - a delightful melange of cynical, naive, wise and conniving - prance through the play on their individual quests for romance or revenge. With tumultuous twists, the tale weaves wit, mirth, surprise and suspense universal game of love.
One of Shakespeare's most celebrated comedies, Much Ado About Nothing tells the tale of two intertwining romances, one impetuous, the other reluctant. Union seems unstoppable for Claudio and Hero, who meet, fall desperately in love and plan to wed within a week. But an embittered villain never strays far from the narrative of a Shakespearean comedy, and Much Ado About Nothing is no exception. Don John devises a sinister, slanderous plan to ruin the wedding. Contrasting the youthful lovers, Beatrice and Benedict go to great lengths to conceal their mutual affection. Romance seems impossible for the quarrelsome pair, who feign disinterest, hurl insults and spout mockery. But for how long can they sustain the banter?
