Avenue Q

Avenue Q at Wyndhams Theatre

Why see Avenue Q?

closed October 30th 2010

A modern classic, Avenue Q is the brash, ballsy and outrageous parable of figuring out life after college, falling in love, finding a job and paying the bills, with puppets!

Currently on hiatus, Avenue Q's West End past has seen the Broadway crossover smash records, finding it's home first at the Noel Coward in March 2006, followed by a short stay at The Gielgud and finally settling at The Wyndhams Theatre until October 2010.

what is is about?

For a generation blighted by messages from saccharine, well meaning television, telling them they're a special snowflake, and to follow their dreams, it's always a shock to realise you may just be, normal. Imitating the most famous kids show of all, Sesame Street, we meet the community that live on the crummy Avenue Q. Cheap and cheerful, this outer-outer borough of New York houses a plethora of colourful and foul mouthed residents who's opinions on life, the internet and everything are passed on to the earnest Princeton, a new graduate with a B.A in English and not much else.

In search of his purpose, he navigates this new and scary landscape, aided by well meaning and lonely Kate, closet case Rod and his house mate Nicky, Gary Coleman, down on his luck child star turned janitor, porn addled Trekkie Monster and swayed by the sweet, but sinister Bad Idea Bears, who won't let a little thing like responsibility get in the way of having fun.

With original, politically incorrect songs that cover a range of hilarious topics, (such as 'The Internet is good for porn' and 'I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today') Avenue Q has found a comfortable home in the theatre fan canon!

did you know?

Many of the original cast of this Sesame street send up were actually puppeteers on the show!

Key Information

Audience

AVENUE Q contains scenes which may be unsuitable for children under 12. Children under 5 are not admitted. It is safe to say that if you are an adult with a good sense of humour, then AVENUE Q is right up your street.

Is it appropriate for kids? Er, well, this is where it gets a bit fuzzy. If your teenager is mature enough to see a musical about issues such as sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn, then they'll probably love AVENUE Q too! Only you can judge. It's hard to say what exact age is right to see AVENUE Q - parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this - if you do bring your teenagers to AVENUE Q - they'll think you're really cool!

Funny, Incredible and Enjoyable

For all the insight and the depth however, first and foremost this show is funny: sometimes cringe-worthy, sometimes make you laugh till you pee a little bit.

Laughed too much

Yeah ok I laugh at the simplest of things, but, I was told during the interval to keep it down during the second half. Apparently I was spoiling the performance for other people! ... Read more

Lots of Fun

A wonderful evening in a beautiful theatre. The show is hilarious and the quality of the performance is matched by the friendlyness and professionalism of the staff we met in the Gielgud theatre, from box office to bar to auditorium staff everybody was smiling and helpful. The location of the venue is also superb as Chinatown is less than a minute away - crispy duck pancakes followed by naughty puppets - who could ask for more?! ... Read more
