The Young Vic's powerful and stripped back revival of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge comes to the Wyndhams Theatre, with Mark Strong returning in the role of tortured longshoreman Eddie Carbone and Phoebe Fox as his precocious teenage niece Catherine. Ivo van Hove's production is a stripped back affair with "naked" sets to focus on the characterisation and to give it a highly tense feel.
Eddie Carbone is an Italian-American longshoreman working the docks in Brooklyn, where he lives with his wife Beatrice and orphaned daughter Catherine. Catherine, now in her teens is blossoming into a woman, much to Eddie's discomfort. His anxiety over her budding sexuality increases when his wife's cousins arrive from Sicily illegally, in the hope of securing work and sharing in the American Dream. Marco, tall dark and brooding wants to send money back to his wife and child that he left behind; he differs from his ebullient younger brother Rodolpho, who is flamboyant and optimistic; he catches Catherine's eye, and earns Eddie's instant dislike.
The house becomes a tense atmospheric battle of wills between alpha males Marco and Eddie, and results in an emotionally charged confrontation where boundaries are grossly overstepped, leading to a betrayal with massive consequences for all involved.
