A Day in the Death of Joe Egg

Why see A Day in the Death of Joe Egg?

A Funny and moving masterpiece

Starring Toby Stephens, Claire Skinner, Storme Toolis and Patricia Hodge!

Toby Stephens (Black Sails, Oslo) and Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, The Father) return to the West End this autumn to star in this brand new revival of Peter Nichol's 1967 black comedy. As married couple Bri and Shelia, Stephens and Skinner will navigate the toll that raising their severely disabled daughter Josephine has had on their relationship and how they use fantasy to approach their child and her needs.

Provocative in its use of bleak humour to address Joe's suffering and the taboos society places on it, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg was last seen in London in 2001, with Clive Owen and Victoria Hamilton and has twice been committed to celluloid, once in 1970 and again in 2002. This new production will see direction from Simon Evans (Killer Joe). A groundbreaking piece upon its premiere, it is likely to prove an interesting choice for the venue.

What is the story?

Bri and Shelia have spent the last 10 years dedicated to caring for their daughter Josephine who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and is almost entirely brain dead. Regardless, Shelia still strives to give Joe a good life whilst hoping for a remarkable recovery. Bri, on the other hand, is increasingly weary and begins to think of a way to end his family's pain, forever...

Our review

Dark, intimate, loveable

A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg primes audiences to expect the unusual right from the play's name. Then there's the subject matter - relationship drama meets raising a severely handicapped child - which is not something you see every day on stage.
