As with Vermeer's art - the play captures many moments of beauty, as iridescent and fleeting as the surface of a pearl, combined with enough psychological grit to warrant a two-hour show

Girl With A Pearl Earring tells the captivating tale of the elusive relationship between painter Johannes Vermeer and his housemaid Griet. Adapted by David Joss Buckley from Tracy Chevalier's novel of the same title, this speculative-historical story shows growing relationship between the great painter and Griet, who is hired to help in his house. Her natural inclination to the visual sparks Vermeer's attention and she is allowed privileged access to Vermeer's studio, thus provoking the jealousy of his wife. Griet begins helping in his studio, learning the art. Captivated by her, she secretly becomes Vermeer's model and the muse for his masterpiece 'Girl With A Pearl Earring'.
Directed by Joe Dowling and designed by Peter Mumford, Girl With The Pearl Earring stars Northern Irish actor Adrian Dunbar as Vermeer. Dunbar's previous London theatre performances include King Lear, Saved, Pope's Wedding and Ghosts. Griet is played by Kimberley Nixon, from acclaimed BBC costume drama Cranford, who makes her professional stage debut.
