La Strada

La Strada at The Other Palace

Why see La Strada?

The long-awaited musical adaptation arrives!

As part of The Other Palace's (currently St James Theatre) inaugural season in 2017, Federico Fellini's Oscar-winning 1957 film is transformed into a stunning new musical adaptation by the producer of recent West End hits Top Hat, The Play That Goes Wrong and Hetty Feather. Helmed by Olivier nominee Sally Cookson, the score is composed by Benji Bower in what is a long-awaited move to theatre. Set in the postwar Italian countryside, La Strada (translated: The Road) follows a simple-minded peasant girl and a brutal carnival strongman on a perilous journey to acceptance, exploring pride and survival along the way.

A tragic folk tale for the heroine, sold to the strongman by her alcoholic, penniless mother into servitude, she seeks redemption and a place in this cruel world with the help of a mischievous tightrope walker whom they encounter at a circus. However, her happiness is shortlived thanks to the pride of her cruel master, who callously abandons her to her death high in a mountain pass. Considered widely to be a cinematic masterpiece, the Oscar-winning weepie starred Anthony Quinn as the nasty Zampano and Giulietta Masina as the sweet Gelsomina.
