The Pirates of Penzance

The Pirates of Penzance at London Coliseum

Why see The Pirates of Penzance?

All board

All aboard for the return of Mike Leigh's production of this Gilbert and Sullivan quintessential seafaring comic opera! Ever since its first turn on the London stage in 1880, The Pirates of Penzance has been a firm favourite with opera audiences, enamoured with the tale of Frederic, his life with the colourful Pirates of Penzance, and his quest for true love.

Including beloved tunes such as 'The Modern Major-General's Song,' Pirates promises to be as witty and dazzling as ever, Frederic's tenure with the meddlesome pirates plays out in hilarious style!

What is the story?

The Pirates of Penzance introduces us to young Frederic, for whom his approaching 21st birthday means freedom from his apprenticeship to a band of wily pirates. When he meets the beautiful Mabel and falls head over heels, his release couldn't come sooner. But the course of true love is as bumpy as the seven seas, especially when he discovers he was born on a leap year!
