Written by George and Ira Gershwin, the production first opened on Broadway in 1935 to what some would consider a poor reception. Due to its racially charged themes and the then daring casting choice of classically trained African-American singers, Porgy and Bess certainly made waves. However, since then the Opera has become one of the best known and loved in the world. With countless revivals in both grand theatre's and smaller venues alike, its sweeping tale and classic score has made Porgy and Bess an ingrained member of any Operatic repertoire.

What is Porgy and Bess about?

Set in the crowded tenements of Charleston, South Carolina, Catfish Row is home to a close-knit community, Porgy a local beggar who spends his days selling his wares from his old cart stumbles upon Bess. Discarded and abused by her lover, Crown, Bess confides in Porgy who takes pity on her. As the pair battle Bess' demons and try to save her from ruin, the past begins to rear its ugly head, when Crown once again appears Bess must make a choice...
