Iolanthe

Iolanthe at London Coliseum

Why see Iolanthe?

A gilbert and Sullivan fantasia

It's the whimsy of Fairyland against the lechery of the House of Lords in this classic Savoy Opera from the hilarious 18th-century duo Gilbert and Sullivan. A thinly veiled dig at the government of the time, fans of Victoriana will love this upbeat satirical fantasy that parodies not only Queen Vic, but her relationship with 'close companion' John Brown, the Tory opposition and the Liberal Prime Minister William Gladstone. Who says the past is a foreign country? In Iolanthe, it's a fairytale Queendom!

Full of the hallmarks of Gilbert and Sullivan's back catalogue, Iolanthe is an irreverent comedy that weaves a tale full of magical beings, slapstick, interspecies romance and braying party politics into gold, scored with memorable finesse.

Purists will tut at the extra humour, and McCrystal’s trademark pratfalls and physical jokes, but this is a real crowd pleaser that will satisfy the family and spread much joy. It deserves many re-runs. ... Read more
