Romantic entanglement and deceit galore, in this darkly comic farce
This exciting adaptation of Mozart and Da Ponte's comic masterpiece is a vibrant introduction to opera for those new to the genre, and equally a satisfyingly and well-rounded production for opera aficionados. Soraya Mafi and Hanna Hipp perform alongside Benson Wilson and Neal Davies as the two pairs of lovers in this fun-filled night at the Coliseum.
Innovative director Phelim McDermott - who returns to direct this production - has been praised for his visionary reinterpretation of this challenging comedy, called "witty, exuberant and quietly revisionist" by critics. This bold joint production between the ENO and Met Opera places our four lovers in the slightly creepy fairgrounds of 1950s Coney Island, New York, where sensual pleasure is only a stones throw away and the fairground master - Don Alfonso - has the magical ability to distort reality... and make anything possible!
A story of desire, lust and love. Sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi are on Coney Island enjoying a holiday with their fiances, Guglielmo and Ferrando. However, Don Alfonso, the manipulative master of the fairground has a game he wishes to play with the lovers.
