Carousel

Why see Carousel?

twinkle twinkle little star

Tony winner and consummate Jean Valjean Alfie Boe returns to the West End alongside classical cross-over artist Katherine Jenkins for 41 performances only of a brand new staging of Roger's and Hammerstein's musical of second chances. Famous for originating football anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' amongst a host of other beloved tunes from the iconic writing and composing duo, this hotly anticipated revival is directed by Lonny Price, (the man responsible for 2016's Sunset Boulevard), and features the ENO's 40 piece orchestra and chorus.

WHAT IS CAROUSEL ABOUT?

Billy Bigelow (Boe) is a charismatic carousel barker who falls in love with local factory worker Julie Jordan (Jenkins) in the small town of Boothbay Harbor, Maine. After a whirlwind romance, Billy and Julie marry but are now both unemployed. Desperate to prove himself a worthy breadwinner (especially as Julie is pregnant) Billy falls back into a life of crime with his old friend Jigger Craigin. The two men plan a robbery together, but it ends in tragedy, with Billy turning a knife upon himself to avoid capture. Fifteen years later, Billy is granted one last chance to return to earth from 'up there' to repair the damage he has done to his wife and his now teenage daughter.

Dubbed by Richard Rodger as his favourite of the pair's oeuvre, Carousel plays upon the universal themes of love and loss, redemption and acceptance. It's a touching and memorable work that will resonate with audiences of all backgrounds.

A refreshing new take on a classic favourite

I was so looking forward to seeing this as has always been my absolute favourite, I went with an open mind and was not disappointed!, it's easy to expect to see what you know but this being an outdoor production and on such a unique stage was always going to be different, the singing was haunting and the dancing beautiful to watch, I know people expected to see the dancing horses of the carousel but if you just sat back and used your imagination you would get it, I loved every minute of this production from the first notes of the instruments to the last bow, well done to you all and thank you for the experience!. ... Carousel

A strangely dark production. All the leads were very good and it’s hard to go wrong with those terrific songs. For me, it was written in the 40s, so why try to bring twenty-first century attitudes to it? The big numbers, like ‘June is bustin’ out’ never quite got going nor gave me the spine tingle. But the open air theatre is always a joy and I loved the brass band bit. ... Read more

A brilliant night. Again!

I've seen this show a few times now at the Savoy, and would absolutely recommend it. Jeremiah James is perfect as Billy, and the entire company have been flawless each time I have seen the show. Granted, the venue isn't the nicest theatre in London, but the show more than makes up for this. See it! Enjoy it! ... Read more
