Why see The Frogs?
Sondheim Rarity
Following their acclaimed revival of Sondheim's hidden gem Anyone Can Whistle, The Grey Area theatre company will delight Southwark Playhouse with another rarely-staged Sondheim work: The Frogs. With a book by Burt Shevelove and Nathan Lane, original orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and original choreography and direction by Broadway powerhouse Susan Stroman, The Frogs promises an irreverent night of musical theatre unlike anything else on stage!
What Is The Story?
Faced with a crumbling society, Dionysos heads to the Underworld, theatre mask in tow, hoping to ask Hades to bring someone back to life who might save humanity... the theatre writer George Bernard Shaw. But with chaos on the horizon, what begins as a heroic quest quickly spirals into something far slimier. Enter the frogs blocking the River Styx. They're not just any frogs though; they're obstinate and absolutely unwilling for anything to change... you might call them conservative. As Dionysos battles for the fate of the world, he's forced to ask: can art save us, or are we all just croaking in the dark?
