Launched in 1999, Burn the Floor has toured the world ever since, including turns on Broadway and in the West End. Directed and choreographed by ball- room dance champion Jason Gilkison, the production is tightly-drilled, fast paced and newly revised to include dancers Robin Winsor, Kristina Rihanoff and Karen Hauer, all of Stricly Come Dancing fame. From romantic waltzes to the lindy hop and the rumba, this show is all about variety.
The dancers whirl through numerous costume changes; from evening wear to rock chic, the sparkly and daring costumes show off the performers athletic physiques. Featuring a bandstand, a staircase and giant glitter ball, the simple set ably serves the dancers while a high-energy soundtrack is complimented by a live band and singers.
WHAT IS BURN THE FLOOR ABOUT?While there is no specific story to speak of, the production focuses on different scenarios and historical locations for the thrilling dance numbers. In the prologue, a senorita glides sultrily down the aisles drawing admiring glances from the audience.
Sexiness is indeed a hallmark of the show and the dancers couple it with considerable drive in displays of phenomenal energy and physical vigor. Unlike other exhibition-style dancers, the cast looks like they are thoroughly enjoying themselves as they somersault, spin and split-lift. Expect an evening of kinetic and ferocious fun.
