Why see Northern Ballet: Jane Eyre?

Reader, She Danced With Him

Northern Ballet returns to London with the sumptuous story-ballet of Jane Eyre. Cathy Marston choreographs a layered exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism in this gothic romance. Enhancing the performance presented at Sadler's Wells is an original score by Philip Feeney. Nominated for the South Bank Sky Arts Dance Award 2017, Charlotte Bronte's story following the eponymous heroine's journey to overcome the odds is given a new audience through dance.

Leeds-based touring company, Northern Ballet, was set up in 1969 by Laverne Meyer and is best known for telling stories through dance with inventive contemporary works. Along with award-winning Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, the company is credited with raising the profile of dance in the UK by reaching wide audiences across the country.

What is Jane Eyre about?

Jane Eyre is a young girl who knows little kindness having been orphaned at a young age and taken in by her uncle and a reluctant aunt. After her uncle's death, Jane battles against the bullying of her cruel aunt and relentless cousins. She accepts a position as Governess at Thornfield Hall, the master of which is the Byronic hero, Mr Rochester who is a mysterious and temperamental man. The two are worlds apart in class but despite their social differences, bond and grow closer. It soon becomes apparent however that Rochester has a hidden past with a catalogue of dark secrets threatening to ruin their fledgling romance.
