Lewis Carroll's Alice and a wonderland of wonderful characters returns for 2025, as the Royal Ballet revives Christopher Wheeldon's critically acclaimed ballet, this summer. It had a fantastic reception at its world premiere at the Royal Opera House in 2012 and has since become a modern classic for families, not least for its hugely enjoyable combination of story, inventiveness, and sheer theatrical verve.
Whilst at a garden party, Alice spots a family friend (Lewis Carroll, no less) transform into a white rabbit. Curiosity piqued, she follows him into a wood - and falls down a deep rabbit hole. From there, the Rabbit acts as her guide to this mysterious new world, with the whole Company involved in the fun, portraying a myriad of quirky characters: a tap-dancing Mad Hatter, a sinuous caterpillar, an overly maternal frog, a disembodied Cheshire Cat and of course, the tyrannical, insane Queen of Hearts.
Alice and the romantic Knave of Hearts are at the centre of the story, but when The Queen is around, you cannot help but notice her, especially as the spirit of classical ballet tries to take her over with disastrous - but hilarious results. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a brilliantly imagined show with something for everyone to treasure.
Each step along Alice's journey is matched to perfection by Joby Talbot's engaging and atmospheric music and Bob Crowley's endlessly inventive and colourful designs.
