Pioneering theatre and film director Sam Mendes makes his Royal Court debut as he reunites with Jerusalem playwright Jez Butterworth for a new play set in Derry during the Troubles. Having won an Olivier Award and Tony for Jerusalem starring British legend Mark Rylance, the return of the dream duo to the stage has already launched whispers of a West End transfer. Mendes' most recent work includes helming two successful Bond movies, Skyfall and then Spectre, however he will be concentrating further on theatre rather than returning to the 007 franchise.

Set during the height of the Northern Irish Troubles, the story centres on the farming Carney family, residing in rural Derry. As they prepare to bring in the year's harvest, their peaceful idyll is shattered with the arrival of a visitor, just as they settle down for their celebrations. Bringing troubling news of a prison hunger strike in which 10 republican prisoners starved themselves to death, the large family are faced with a choice; to take up the sword in aid of the prisoners or work the fields for the family.
