The Boys In The Band

Why see The Boys In The Band?

Mark Gatiss returns to the stage in this tense new play!

LGBT theatre has seen a huge rise in popularity during the Noughties, and this new revival of Mart Crowley's hit 1968 play sees a huge celebrity draw in the lead casting of Mark Gatiss, opposite his real-life husband, actor and screenwriter Ian Hallard. Set in New York at a birthday party, it seems a case of the Ghost of Birthdays Past when truths come to light under the influence of alcohol. A must-see for fans of Gatiss and Hallard in their first joint acting production!

This production will transfer to the Vaudeville Theatre from February 7 - 18th, 2017. Click here to see details and book tickets.

What is it about?

Taking place in an upscale New York apartment, a group of gay menare celebrating Harold's (Gatiss) birthday, hosted by his "frenemy" Michael (Hallard). Morose at the prospect of not being able to attract younger men, things seemingly take an upturn for Harold when he is gifted with a male prostitute called Cowboy. However, events quickly turn dark again when Michael's allegedly straight college friend Alan arrives unexpectedly, needing to speak with Michael urgently.

As the drinks flow, the banter between the men becomes more nasty and pointed, culminating in a risky game where each player must call somebody on the telephone and declare their love. When it comes to Alan's turn, Michael spitefully snatches the phone from him, believing that his friend is in fact gay - only to find that Alan has called his wife. What Alan wanted to discuss with Michael remains a history, leaving us to make our own conclusions.
