Malorie Blackman's iconic novel is brought to life on stage
A stalwart of English literature for the past 20 years, Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses is acclaimed for its retelling of Romeo in Juliet in a world divided by race. This enthralling stage adaptation by Dominic Cooke at Regents Park Open Air Theatre breathes new life into the story of Sephy and Callum, two young lovers caught in the crossfire of revolution.
First published in 2001, Blackman's trilogy captured imaginations far beyond its young adult genre, winning numerous awards and being included on The Guardian's prestigious list of the 100 best books of the 21 Century. Directed by Tinuke Craig (A Raisin In The Sun) marking her debut at Regents Park, don't miss this essential modern work.
What is the story?
Set in the 22nd century in a parallel universe, society is divided into two categories, the dark-skinned Crosses, and the light-skinned Noughts. With the Crosses at the top of the tree politically, economically, and socially and the Noughts left to fight for whatever resources they can, two young people, Cross Sephy and Nought Callum fall in love. But can their romance survive the ever-deepening divide between their two strata? With revolution brewing and the streets a battlefield, the couple must fight for each other, tearing down their beliefs in the process.
