Star Wars hero John Boyega makes his stage return in John Thorne's new adaptation of Georg Buchner's famously unfinished work. Poverty, pain, and passion lead the poor Woyzeck down a perilous path of destruction in this uncompromising play. Often regarded as a masterpiece of the 20th Century, Woyzeck shows us the sharp, transformative power of exploitation and brutality, and how the consequences can change the course of one life forever.
Constantly taunted by his peers and superiors , the poverty-stricken soldier Woyzeck is unable even to find solace in his home life, with partner Maire looking for consolation elsewhere and their son an outcast for being illegitimate. Rage and anxiety burn through him, possibly at the fault of an experimental doctor, but the psychosis grows into violent insanity in this sad tome of hardship and revenge, proving that some things are not always worth forgiveness.
Directed by Joe Murphy, Woyzeck is a visceral piece of theatre, known today as a working class tragedy, this new production aims to create the same 'howl of rage' that Buchner's had orignally intended, introducting a new audience to this influential work.
