Show Boat

Why see Show Boat?

All aboard!

Once an exciting and glittering part of American entertainment, the river show boats of the Mississippi are now a fleeting memory. But now, Show Boat is making a comeback! A true classic of American musical comedy, this is an epic tale of enduring love and racial tolerance that will have you dancing all the way home.

Featuring popular tunes from the Oscar Hammerstein III song book, such as 'Ol' Man River' and 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man', this all-American trip down memory lane will be sailing into the New London Theatre this April.

The show caused a stir when it debuted in the late 1920's, never before had audiences witnessed the marrying of serious subject matter with musical theatre spectacle. Show Boat was truly revolutionary compared to the light hearted musical romps and comedies that preceded it.

the story of show boat!

Brilliant Show, just go while you still can! Tickets cheaper

Dazzling, vibrant performances that were about as good as you can get- stunning opening tenor voice singing 'Only Make Believe' and then matched in standard by equally fab soprano. The other main voices were also brilliant, as were the supporting chorus. They made the very best of 'Can't Help Lovin Dat Man' and Paul Robeson would probably have been delighted with the young guy's fine, firm interpretation of 'Ole Man River.' The dance sequences were exciting and thrilling and it was just a shame that they didn't play the overture. It's coming off soon; one suggestion is that Showboat doesn't get enough cover, perhaps this company could soon revive and tour with it. Back in the 1930's Kearne and Hammerstein were cutting totally new ground, surely setting the stage for the other 'biggies' that we know and love today. Showboat deserves to be preserved, treasured and to 'keep rollin along!' https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186338-d4497348-r402292440-New_London_Theatre-Lo ... Read more
