Private Peaceful

Private Peaceful at Ambassadors Theatre

Why see Private Peaceful?

Michael Morpurgo's heartfelt and moving WW1 novel is adapted for the stage by the National Youth Theatre and directed by Simon Reade as part of their 2014 rep season. Inspired by the tales of court-martialled soldiers "shot at dawn" after perceived cowardice or desertion, this forms a sharp look at the senselessness of war, and the ineptitude of the commanding officers.

Private "Tommo" Peaceful is awaiting the firing squad at dawn for alleged desertion. As he awaits his fate, we relive his life through his eyes from village life before the conflict, through his experiences in the trenches, leading up to the fateful day of his execution. Experience love, loss and the true meaning of courage as we see Tommo's short yet extraordinarY life unfolding on the stage, up until the play's tragic and heartbreaking conclusion.

Private Peaceful forms part of the NYT Rep season alongside Selfie and Macbeth. This play makes an excellent companion show to see with Michael Morpurgo's highly successful West End show, War Horse.
