The magic of Roald Dahl is being brought to life at the National Theatre with the Roald Dahl Story Company in this stage adaptation of 'The Witches'. The production will feature a book and lyrics by Olivier Award-winner Lucy Kirkwood, directed by Olivier Award-Winning Lyndsey Turner, and music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominee Dave Malloy.
Everyone knows that Witches absolutely detest children; detest is not a strong enough word... they hate, loathe, despise! What sort of child do they hate the most, you ask? A clean one. To us, they could smell as fresh as a daisy, but to a Witch, well... they smell like dogs' droppings. Unfortunately for the children of England, The Grand High Witch is planning to get rid of every child. Is there anyone who can stop her?
When Roald Dahl was a child he used to spend every summer holiday with his family in Norway, it has been said that Grandmother in The Witches was partially inspired by Roald's own mother, he also dedicated the book to his wife Liccy. In 1983, the year the book was published, The Witches won three awards: The Federation of Children's Book Groups Award, The Whitbread Award and The New York Times Outstanding Books Award.
