Faustus: That Damned Woman
Don't miss this stunning gender-bent adaption of the gothic myth Faustus
My name is Johanna Faustus. I was born almost four hundred years ago. I gave my soul to achieve the impossible. I watched this city grow sick and I swore to heal it. I might be damned, but I would save the world to spite the Devil.

Spinning Goethe's tale of hubris and damnation on its head, Award-winning British playwright Chris Bush offers a bold reimagining of Faustus in partnership with up and coming Irish director Caroline Byrne. Set to run at the Lyric Hammersmith in January 2020, the radical, gender-bending adaptation casts a woman as the titular tragic anti-hero and flips her motivations for a truly modern, thought-provoking journey through the ages.
Born almost 400 years ago, Johanna Faustus sold her soul to the devil, just like her male counterpart, and lives an immortal life. But burdened by her conscience, she vows to heal the ailing world around her, using her terrible gift to change the course of history and right the many wrongs wrought by human kind. Of course achieving such greatness means sacrifice, perhaps one with a higher price than her soul.
