Family, duty and ambition collide in Marriage Material
Adapted by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti (A Kind of People) from Sathnam Sanghera's Costa Book Award-nominated novel, Marriage Material is a poignant and powerful exploration of identity and family duty, playing at the Lyric Hammersmith this spring. Brought to the stage under the direction of Iqbal Khan (East Is East), don't miss this wonderful, and perhaps very relatable, play.
For three generations now, the Bains family shop has stood fast in their Wolverhampton community. As society changes in the 20th century, Mrs. Bains is juggling a lot; keeping the shop going, looking after her sick husband and trying to raise her two daughters, whose very different ambitions pull them in opposite directions. Meanwhile, their brother Arjan is unwillingly brought back to Wolverhampton from London following a tragedy in the family, and his mother is adamant the shop must not close despite everything. Can his family hold on to both their heritage and their hopes for the future?
