Deaf Republic

An exploration of the ways in which we are sometimes willingly deaf, whether socially, culturally, or politically, to the hardships of those next to us.

Why see Deaf Republic?
Haunting Adaptation
Adapted from Ukranian-American writer Ilya Kaminsky's haunting novel, Dead Centre and Zoe McWhinney's Deaf Republic combines British Sign Language, spoken word and creative use of silence and captioning to turn the story into a visceral theatrical experience. With deaf and hearing performers working side by side, the piece moves fluidly between poetry and protest, creating a language of rebellion that transcends sound.
What Is The Story?
In a town gripped by military rule, a single act of violence becomes the catalyst for radical defiance. When a child is killed for failing to respond to a command he could never hear, silence becomes the community's weapon. In this charged atmosphere, resistance is no longer spoken; it's signed, staged and seen.
