On the trail of the occult for a new novel, socialite Charles Condomine finds himself messing with the wrong kind of supernatural beings when he enlists the eccentric Madame Arcati, a medium, to help with a seance. But the hapless Madame Arcati unknowingly summons the spirit of Charles' ex-wife, the vengeful Elvira and she is none to impress with being back on this mortal coil. .
Opening in the West End in 1941, Noel Coward wasn't sure about the welcome it would receive. Would the public be ready for a darkly comic farce about ghosts in the midst of the war? But he needn't have worried; the mischievous Blithe Spirit was a hit, with its typical Coward wit and wisdom. Now in its 5th London revival with the imitable Angela Landsbury at the helm as the hilarious Madame Arcati, this ghostly comedy will do more than just send shivers down your spine! .
Charles Condomine wants to write a book on ghouls and ghosts and the occult, but ends up getting far more than he bargained for when he invites a medium, Madame Arcati to host a seance in his house for material. But that's when his angry ex-wife Elvira makes contact from the other side, not at all pleased to see that Charles has moved on, marrying Ruth. .
Making sure only Charles can see her, she starts a series of troublesome events, starting harmless, but eventually becoming potentially life threatening. Its up to Charles and Madame Arcati to exorcize the troublesome spook, and fast! .
Blithe Spirit has been reincarnated as both a film, starring the dreamy Rex Harrison and as a musical, High Spirits, opening on Broadway in 1964.
