As part of a star-studded 2015 season at the Barbican, Juliette Binoche will join the likes of the super-talented Obi Abili, Kirsty Bushell, Samuel Edward-Cook, Finbar Lynch, Patrick O'Kane and Kathryn Pogson in Ivo van Hove's revival of Sophocles' Antigone.
Part of a pan-European and American tour, this production is a brand-new translation of Sophocle's tragedy by TS Eliot Prize-winning poet Anne Carson. The talented cast sees Abili and Edward-Cook reunited, after starring opposite each other in 2014's Shakespeare?s Globe?s production of Titus Andronicus.
Binoche plays the lead role of Antigone, a Theban noblewoman whose dead brother is deemed a traitor after fighting in a civil war for the city's crown. When his body is left unburied and rotting beyond the city walls as punishment by the incumbent monarch Creon, Antigone rebels against the punishment, and defies him in order to bury her brother with the honours that he deserves. But when Creon discovers her plans, he is enraged and condemns her to be buried alive - much to the fury of the Olympian gods.
