Ink at Almeida Theatre

Why see Ink?

A deliciously dark portrait of the man who formed the Sun

Rupert Goold helms a brutally sharp new play by James Graham, which makes its world premiere at the Almeida Theatre this June. Taking aim at one of the world's biggest media tycoons, Rupert Murdoch, this new work follows him as a young man in 1969 as he fights to acquire the Sun newspaper, then a minor player in the red tops. Brash, rebellious and utterly determined to flatten his rivals, watch how Murdoch turned the Sun into one of the most influential newspapers in today's Britain. Fleet Street will never be the same again....

Giving the people what they want, not what they actually need to know. That became the defining tenent of both the now-defunct News Of The World, and its daily sister paper, The Sun. Formerly known prior to 1964 as the Daily Herald; it became a tabloid in 1969 after it was purchased by Murdoch's News Corp. Graham's ruthless play examines the rise of the tabloid phenomenon, and how it led to the subsequent controversies such as the reporting of Hillsborough, closing down its Boverie Street printers much to the ire of its union staff, and of course its inaccurate reportage of the AIDS virus. A must-see for journalists and readers alike, this biting new play will throw new light on the news tycoon and his practices.
