Why see Love Never Dies?

The Ultimate Story of Love and Betrayal

With a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and book by Ben Elton, Kamin Karimloo (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables) stars in this emotionally packed sequel to the universally acclaimed Phantom of the Opera. Tony award winning Glenn Slater (Sister Act, Little Mermaid) takes over lyricist duties in what The Daily Telegraph's Charles Spencer describes as "a constant pleasure, lavishly orchestrated and ranging from deliciously pert vaudeville numbers to those thrillingly romantic love songs."

What's it about?

Set ten years after Phantom of the Opera and relocated to New York's Coney Island, we find that the Phantom has reinvented himself as Mr Y, and runs a circus of curiosities called Phantasma. Still bewitched by Christine (the heroine of the original show) The Phantom invites her to sing at Phantasma as the main attraction. Having no idea that Mr Y is the Phantom she arrives with her husband, Raoul, now gripped by bile and alcohol, along with Gustave, the ten year old son.

It is not long before the Phantom reveals himself to Christine and confesses that his undying love for her is stronger than ever. Christine must face her dilemma and make a choice, Raoul or the Phantom.

The stakes are upped when The Phantom hears Gustave sing and is left certain that he is the boy's father. Raoul discovers Mr Y's true identity and the two confront each other, culminating with the two men making a bet. If Christine sings on the last night of the season, she will belong to The Phantom, if not, she will be Raoul's. But there is another alternative that neither men bargained for.

Brilliant, powerful, fantastic

Ramin Karimloo captures Phantom's awkwardness as well as his brilliance and his powerful voice really does soar. Sierra is fabulous both in voice and presence.

A Misunderstood Webber Masterpiece

Having rushed to see this production in its final days, it is incredibly sad to see a truly remarkable fresh and vibrant production sink under the pressure of its predecessor. Let's be honest, it was never going to excel The Phantom of the Opera, a comparison that blinds its critics and die-hard fans alike to all that is in fact good. Admittedly the alterations to the musical from the original score have made the score far more powerful and the music far more memorable, which was a significant complaint in its infancy, but all in all the production stands tall as one of the best on the West End circuit. This finale cast are all absolutely outstanding and at the final curtain it was clear that their performance had truly touched the all-standing audience. It is a tragedy that this show could not continue to receive the acclaim I believe it truly deserves. See it while you still can and see for yourselves how Mr Webber has come up with yet another musical masterpiece! ... Read more
