Excellent
Andrew is magnificent and I enjoyed every moment. What a talent. I think this will stay with me for a very long time
Beautiful performance, truly imaginative production
I read Uncle Vanya 20 years ago, so I was worried going in that I wouldn't be able to follow a one-man act of a show with such complex emotions. I was wrong. Andrew Scott delivers a rather awe-inspiring performance, turning each character into its own unique person, but in subtle ways that don't feel like caricature. Despite that, they all seemed to be a part of the same whole, which provided a really interesting concept of acting in general. It was funnier than I thought it would be, and the sex scenes managed to be fully sexy, which (even for Andrew Scott) is no easy be feat when you're playing two characters making out and.... You're playing both characters. The lighting is fantastic, and I loved the intimacy of the theater. However, I agree that it was, at times, difficult to hear. Tip- MUCH of the action happens stage right, so if you buy obstructed tickets, be aware that you might miss things depending on where you're sitting.
Astonishing performance
An extraordinary performance of a clever re imagination of Uncle Vanya. Funny and emotional, but it is the performance that steals the show. I loved it
A Phenomenon!
Andrew Scott is a phenomenon. There is no one else like him. I think an Irish leprechaun put a charm on him to give him his prestigious talent. I could believe there were more actors on the stage, some of the transitions were so subtle whereas others were obvious by giving a character an accent. I was mesmerised by Andrew Scott's portrayal of Helena, he made his movements more feminine , the simple touch of the necklace let you know Helena was back in the room! I saw Vanya at a NT screening, thank you NT for these & thank you to Vue cinemas for screening them. I have had great respect for Andrew Scott as an actor for a considerable time but his performance in Vanya was an acting masterclass and has propelled him to another level. He says at one point ' You won't forget me!' No, I won't! Was that a nod to Moriarty, the line resonated with me. Bravo, Mr Scott!
A memorable performance
Andrew Scott is awesome in this play. This was a performance that exhibited human emotion (all of its depth and complexity) ….with all characters performed by one, exposed and vulnerable, individual and which on reflection verged on perfection. Went in wondering if I would enjoy this play and left very content.
National Theatre Live Stream - Excellent View and Sound Quality!
Quick footnote to add to my earlier review, after reading some other comments from people who were in the theatre, about the sound quality and audibility on stage. We watched it locally via National Theatre Live Steam and had none these negative issues, fantastic close up shots of Andrew Scott and could hear him clearly. Simply reinforced my previous good experiences of choosing the NT Live Stream option more often in future! There was none if the usual stresses and expenses of travelling to london, no parking hassles, great comfortable seats with no obstructions or disruptions from other viewers. Overall a great experience, which allowed us to enjoy Andrew Scott’s acting talents up close and personal!!
