Titanic

Titanic at Charing Cross Theatre

Titanic

With rousing songs, clever set design and a great job from all the actors, this diminutive production feels much bigger, packing the emotional punch that would happily fill a bigger house.

Why see Titanic?

Titanic floats again!

Thom Southerland kicks off his tenure as Artistic Director of The Charing Cross Theatre with a brand new revival of this unsinkable play. Set aboard the world famous ocean liner which met with disaster while crossing the Atlantic in 1912, this show weaves together the lives of nine real passengers, examining their thoughts, feelings and final hours across the class system, painting an incredible portrait of the post-Victorian, pre-World War society, the likes of which would never be the same again.

Celebrated Hollywood screenwriter Peter Stone (Charade, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three) created the book while Tony winner Maury Yeston provided the music and lyrics. His score draws inspiration from the music of the period, soundtracking the ship's teeming social strata with everything from Gilbert and Sullivan-esque vaudeville numbers to sweeping orchestral ballads that would make Elgar swoon.

THE STORY SO FAR

Titanic The Musical originally opened on Broadway in 1997 (coincidentally the same year as the James Cameron movie was released) at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it ran for over 800 performances and scooped five Tony Awards. This pared-down revival was first staged in London in 2013, with critics noting it was a much more emotionally engaging piece this time around, having jettisoned some of the original's bombast.
