I saw The Pitmen Painters last night and was intensely moved by the play. There was great humour throughout, drawn from the well defined characters' day to day lives. However what came across was the hardness of their lives, the intelligence and reflective ability of the men, their developing enlightnment and passion for art, the desire to produce something meaningful and the camaraderie that was so evident in the group's emergence as fantastic artists. But for me the most compelling theme was the men's ability to always stay true to themselves and their roots. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants their spirits uplifted - fantastic!!
