Blue Grass Country
I love the film and the Hugh Jackman/Maureen Lipman revival but I don’t need another version of the same. I loved this production; all round amazing arrangements and performances. You don’t need to always leave the theatre ‘on a high’ so I don’t mind going home feeling shocked. I don’t know why Curly became a murderer and that’s puzzling. Didn’t stop me wanting to see it again.
FANTASTIC!
I absolutely loved this reimagined version of this Musical. Not a word changed from the original but what a powerful show. Brilliant the calibre of the acting by all on stage! Go and see but not if you live in the land of nothing must change!
Unforgettable
I loved this show. It cast light, literally, in the dark themes a supposedly joyful musical deceived so many people with fir so many years. This was brave and beautiful and moving.
Stunning
This is not some sickly sweet production in the 1950s mould. darker themes are teased out to great effect. Amazing cast, great staging. I came out genuine in awe.
Loved it!!
This is clearly a Marmite production and if you’re expecting an old fashioned musical you light not love it. But - be open minded to this modern take which exposes the misogyny and classism of when this was originally set (and frankly now!). It was clever, thrilling, shocking, sexy, funny, and kept us rapt throughout. Not a single weak link in the cast - absolutely brilliant!
Oklahoma!
WOW. I don’t understand the average 1.5 rating- I thoroughly enjoyed myself, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. While clearly an unorthodox staging of a classic (THE classic), I was not prepared for what was coming, and by the end my jaw was on the floor. I didn’t grow up with the original (I know most of the classics, just not this one) so I didn’t have expectations- I knew it would be “reimagined†and that’s about it. Perhaps I’m pretentious, or more open to new interpretations, but I thought Oklahoma at the Wyndham was the best production I’ve seen in years, and I’m a regular theatre-goer. The cast was remarkable, the new orchestrations were lovely, the production design was sparse yet efficient, and the directorial choices bold. What it says about gender, class, and justice (what it’s said all along) feel pronounced, fresh, and urgent. Don’t go with expectations and you’ll like it more- the general theme of “they ruined it!†permeates the negative reviews. I loved it.
