Rami Malek and Indira Varma lead a sleek, modern Oedipus at the Old Vic, set in a near-future Thebes on the brink of collapse. The show looks incredible—moody lighting, a minimalist set, and Hofesh Shechter’s intense choreography make for a visually striking experience. But while it’s a feast for the eyes, the emotional punch isn’t quite there. Malek’s Oedipus feels distant, and the chemistry with Varma’s Jocasta never fully sparks. The updated script adds a fresh twist but sometimes feels too modern for its own good. A bold and stylish take on the Greek classic—but one that doesn’t fully hit home.
