Amazing and intense compression
A taut, tense and engrossing production with outstanding performances from all of the six cast members. Mark Arends is captivating as Hamlet and plays the role eloquently, finding new meaning and emphasis in the lines . This is high energy, high emotion, physical expressionist theatre of a high order. The intensity always threatens to snap, but it is cleverly paced and contained. There are some unexpected twists, eg , Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are subsumed into Laertes, and the 'play within the play', is given a completely new life.In the intimate space of Trafalgar Studio 2 the audience is pulled into this storm twister of grief, poisoned loves, blood and psychosis. High risk, high octane theatre at its incendiary best, this is Hamlet stripped bare to its internal core. Serious business.
Wonderful, emotive - a must see!
I was lucky enough to see the play twice in 8 days - once with Edward Bennett in the lead role and once with David Tennant on his return. I enjoyed the performance without Tennant, but on his return it was so very clear that the whole production worked much better. At times during the play I wanted to laugh and/or cry at Tennant's anguished young man - I really felt like I was going through this emotional rollercoaster journey with the whole cast. If you have tickets for the final few performances then you will no doubt enjoy this one. I appreciate how lucky I was to see these performances and I hope that the RSC strike a deal to save this one for posterity ...
Great electrifying performance
I bought the tickets back in September and could only get seats for the last week of the run. Well, lucky me! David Tennant was back, was given 2 standing ovations and he WAS GREAT! Patrick Steward and Oliver Ford Davies were also magnificent and the whole reading of the play was touched by magic.... glad I was there. What a wonderful start of the new year!!!!!!
why not play it again?
I have been watching to see if this is going to be played again and nothing! Why, there are so many people who would like to see it!
a beautiful woman, in the break, at the bar......
The play was great!!! I had the pleausure to shake Jude Laws hand after the play.He is a busy man and had not much time for congratulations.....But better as the play was actually a woman, wich I saw in the break..... She loked beautiful in her white skirt....I think I fell in love....I missed her, what a pitty...!!!
A stunning performance and production
I attended the matinee performance of Hamlet on the 8th of July. Hamlet is my favourite play, so I was delighted to be seeing a production in London involving the brilliant actor, Jude Law. I was absolutely amazed at his portrayal of this wonderful, deeply flawed, tragic hero. For me, Law successfully captured the frustration, humour, intelligence and humanity of Hamlet. The energy he put into this performance was remarkable - I felt very privileged to see him perform. Law was very well-supported by an equally sensational cast, particularly Matt Ryan (Horatio) and Alex Waldmann (Laertes). The staging of this play allowed the audience to be drawn into the world of the text, and I felt that Michael Grandage used the space beautifully, in addition to creating such a stunning set (the closet scene was fabulous and the use of silk drapes, masterful). If you do get the chance to attend this play, I encourage you to do so - you will be astonished at how the play resonates with you.
