Design for Living at the Old Vic
It's been 15 years since I last saw this play in the West End ..a comic tale of tripartite relationships and ego, underpinned by a discrete emptiness and search for fulfillment never disappoints! What isn't there to like ..only a few things ..that might well be corrected before opening..to reach the dizzying heights of Ernest's New York Penthouse. Gilda is superbly played...utterly sexy and absorbing .and whilst Leo provides many comic moments..altho with a little too much leaning towards high pitch pantomime dame and Ant and Dec. The sets might be similarly described! Leo peaks in one scene with an amusing and at times intimidating progression from drunk to paralytic! Ernest is just a little drier than the sherry..and a steady father figure to Gilda..but his mastery of the final scene might need a double brandy prior to opening night. Thank you Old Vic and I presume Kevin Spacey for backing this one! I will be going again in a couple of weeks time!
