Excellent adaptation of much loved novel!

Saw the play on the opening night. I loved the book and I thought that the adaptation was brilliant and really caught the spirit of the stultifying bourgeois society in Amiens, and the terrifying claustrophobia of the trenches and the tunnels. The casting was excellent, with Ben Barnes superb as Stephen Wraysford. I would also single out Lee Ross as a heartwrenchingly lovable Jack Firebrace. Highly recommended.

I found this to be a most moving production with some wonderful acting. I am hoping to see it again before it finishes. Ben Barnes was superbly cast.

A most impressive interpretation of the book. Casting was inspired with Ben Barnes a convincing Stephen Wraysford and Lee Ross as Jack Firebrace. The visit was a belated birthday present and after reading some of the earlier reviews I was somewhat apprehensive but these were quickly dispelled. My only criticism was the latter "5 minute interlude" where a roll call of the victims of the WW1 was running. The audience weren't too sure how to react to this, i.e. was it an interlude or should they sit quietly? Nonetheless excellent direction, and scene changes and a great performance by all the cast.

Great set changes to enhance the play

We thought the set changes added to the story. However, the affair between characters Steven Wrayswoth and Isabelle Azaire was not fully developed at the beginning of the play. Where they ran off to---England or another part of France was not revealed and why they were separated during the war and still not a couple was not told. An amount of rewriting would help. The senselessness of the war was well developed but the play ending was sad with Isabelle going off with a German and Steven with no one. The showing of the names of those killed in the war during the intermission between the second and third acts was eerie. We thought the play was engaging and the theater was full for a Thursday matinee.

I felt moved at times through the play and like the first reviewer thought the part of Jack was played very well. I think the main characters need time to develop the emotion and relationship in their performances as I didn't find them wholely believeable - unlike the character of Jack Firebrace and indeed the other soldiers. I was moved far more by the trench relationships than the love affair between Stephen and Isabelle.

It was a little disappoiting after the amazing book and the promise of Trevor Nunn but I am glad I have seen it. The sets were excellent. It needs the script and the performance tightening up and cut the length by 20 mins or so. I found the roll call quite moving but alas the audience was restless and unsure - perhaps need a little more direction themselves!Shame that the direct steal from the last scene of Blackadder didnt have the same power.
