The Reviews Are In For The Devil Wears Prada

The critics channel their inner Miranda Priestly on Elton John's new musical

Continuing a trend that has dominated stages in the West End and on Broadway in recent years, The Devil Wears Prada is the latest beloved movie to get a musical adaptation with a soundtrack from Elton John no less. But even Aunty Elton couldn't stop the critics from channeling their inner Miranda Priestley as they reviewed the show this week.

While it looks like they enjoyed the production values (important for a show about a fashion bible), and star Vanessa Williams (Miranda) got some decent notices, on the whole, in a West End landscape already crowded by screen-to-stage musicals, this Devil's dresses may be more Temu than Prada.

The Headlines

"A prosecco o'clock musical, briskly directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, that replicates the 2006 film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway to within an inch of its haute couture-clad life, but without capturing its icy heart."
The Guardian

"Lavish stage adaptation of the hit film looks good, but has nothing to say"
The Stage

" This musical feels squarely aimed at the mass market, and it's neither aspirational nor memorable enough to escape the sale rack."
The Independent

"Ultimately, The Devil Wears Prada is promising couture but offering something off-the-rack. And... that's all."
