See what the critics have said about Backstairs Billy!

The West End production is currently playing at the Duke of Yorks Theatre
The reviews are in for the Marcelo Dos Santos play "Backstairs Billy"! The production officially began performances on October 27, 2023, at the Duke of York's Theatre and is set to play through to January 27, 2024. Directed by Michael Grandage, the play takes us back to 1979, during Billy's first year in service to the Queen Mother. As Britain simmers with political tension during the most tumultuous days of Margaret Thatcher's premiership, the grandeur of Clarence House provides a safe haven. And it's going to take more than a few gin martinis to face the outside world. See what the critics had to say below!
"There's something gleefully subversive about Dos Santos's script and Grandage's bouncy production, which makes it compelling." - TimeOut
"The performances could not be better. I last saw Evans on this same stage in Rent Remixed, but nothing in my experience of him so far suggested the layers of feeling that he brings to this sleekly coiffed purveyor of bravado whose ego gets rather dramatically punctured." - The Arts Desk
The performances could not be better.
"It has all the trappings of a West End hit. A sumptuous set by Christopher Oram that places the late Queen Mother in the garden room of Clarence House, all flower paintings, floral displays and damask curtains." - WhatsOnStage
It has all the trappings of a West End hit
"It is a clever, deceptive play, which slips down as easily as a bucket of gin and dubonnet, and it revels in the idea of royalty as performance and theatre, full of high campery." - Stage Door
