What Did The Critics Think of Endgame?

Starring Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Cumming

Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Cumming star in a rarely revied double bill from Irish playwright Samuel Beckett at the Old Vic Theatre! But, what did the critics think?

Overall it was a mixed bag from the British press! The Guardian were full of praise for the production saying, "Richard Jone's visually and verbally vivid revival, with Alan cumming and Daniel Radcliffe in charismatic tandem..."

They continued with, "This production strongly has the feel of a lost cousin to Pinter's The Dumb Waiter (1957), where temperamentally contrasting men attend another kind of death and which Pinter wrote at almost exactly the time Beckett worked on the first version of Rough for Theatre II. In both this fascinating curiosity and the more celebrated Endgame, Radcliffe and Cumming achieve the Beckett paradox of exhilarating bleakness."

The Evening Standard mirrored the sentiment, giving high praise for Radcliffe with "Daniel Radcliffe gives his best stage performance yet in Samuel Beckett double-bill." The Stage too praised Radcliffe with, "Wonderful comic performances from Alan Cumming and Daniel Radcliffe breath new life into Beckett's masterful play."

However, the Metro were not so enamoured with the production calling it "a gruelling evening". But, they did find delight with cast members Jane Horrocks and Karl Johnson, saying "Every so often, Jane Horrocks and Karl Johnson... pop up out of dustbins, in scene-stealing moments of exquisite lyrical tenderness."

What is Endgame about?

Directed by Richard Jones, Endgame follows a servant and master trapped in a co-dependent spiral of savagery and misplaced hope. In their bleak universe, they're also joined by Hamm's parents, Nag and Nell, each spewing forth their own bile from matching dustbins.

Endgame is now playing at the Old Vic Theatre through to 28 March.
