The Evening Standard were full of praise for the production, especially for leading stars Foy and Smith, saying, "Matt Smith and a luminous, mercurial Claire Foy give tour de force performances in this study of of a couple's struggles and doubts on the road to parenthood."

The Guardian mirrored the sentiment with, "Claire Foy and Matt Smith shine in climate crisis drama". The Stage continued the praise, saying that Lungs was a "thrilling meeting of head and heart."
