Equus dazzles critics once more

The West End transfer of Ned Bennet's production retains its brilliance

Following a spectacular run in Stratford East earlier this year, this storming adaptation of Peter Shaffer's masterpiece once again has critics and audiences raving.

Our very own Kitty McCarron led the praise in her review, calling Equus: "An utterly scintillating piece of theatre", that "(weaves) performance and stagecraft into the reigns of a horrifying yet cathartic tale."

A statement echoed by a wonderfully pun-laden review from The Telegraph who called the production: "(a) splendid revival" adding "If there’s a reason to stampede now to the Trafalgar Studios, it’s that Ned Bennett ... presides over an intensely atmospheric affair that’s unembarrassed in every sense."

Likely to be a hot contender for 2020's Olivier Awards, we can only agree. This is one play you won't want to miss this season.

The story of Equus

Over two and half riveting hours, Schaffer's play introduces us to Alan Strang's haunting story. After blinding six horses in a twisted fit of sexual and religious mania, it's up to Dr. Martin Dysart to question the boy and discover the cause of his violent behavior. But as Dysart delves into Alan's obsession, it only serves to loosen his own grasp on reality -soon serving to blur the lines between 'right' and 'wrong' irrevocably.
